For a Cross Country runner, there is always comfort when a teammate is next to you.  The long arduous hours of summer training, the time spent in a sweaty van with 10 other runners and a coach, the early 5 am fundraising events, computer lab after practice, long 8 hour trips to running camp, and the endless Messages in your phone that drain your battery.  Those special moments in high school that come ONLY ONCE, are what make it special to finish next to a teammate.

Now, imagine finishing next to 5 other teammates, and, imagine finishing in spots 1-6!  Well, that was the story at the Coach Downey XC Classic on Friday, September 29, 2017.  Below is the recap of today’s performances.

JV Boys

20 teams lined up, Crawford finished NUMERO UNO.  In an impressive fashion Yosia Mmbumba (Individual Champion), Liban Omar, Machumbe Esube, Maung Lay, Erik Cisneros, and Medhane Woldu went 1-6 in the race.  A perfect score of 15 versus its nearing rival at 77.  Obed Bimenyimana also earned a medal by placing in the top 15. Other notable performances in this race was Cristofer Olascua who finished in an impressive time of 20:36.  Cristofer is one of 8 freshmen who joined the team and is learning the team culture.

JV Girls

Sango Kyanza finished her first race in 33:28 fighting the doubts of being a rookie and racing her first race.  She stayed focused throughout the race and finished.

Varsity Boys

From 27 Teams, Crawford finished UNO.  The individual champion was Nader Ali with a blistering time of 16:51, it was Nader’s first time under 17 minutes in a Cross Country 5K race.  Mandela Matuta (3rd), Isaq Moalim (4th), Alembe Mloko (6th), Justin Duhimbaze (15th), and Arturo Sandoval (20th) competed in the race.

Varsity Girls

It was a hard day for our lady Colts as two twisted ankles to Islam Ahmed and Ruby Dircio prohibited them to have a good performance.  Ruby toughed out the pain and finished the race.  This team has grown in size and is expected to be better than last year’s team.

“Their bodies are tired, I know that, that was the plan.  Our times still don’t reflect our ability because we want to peak at the right time.  Our girls will have exponential improvements throughout the season.  Our boys will be impressive at the end when it counts.  We will continue to work hard in the classroom and at practice.  We will keep the fire burning.”  Said coach Venancio.

Next week Crawford’s JV and some seniors not going to Clovis will face our Eastern League competitors.  17 boys will go to the Clovis Invitational on Friday morning.
